Flood Inundation Mapping with FLDPLN
Day 2 Session 1 (10:45AM)
Presenters:
Xingong Li, University of Kansas
David Weiss, University of Kansas
Jude Kastens, University of Kansas
Flood inundation mapping is critical for risk assessment, emergency response, infrastructure planning, and flood-plain management. In this workshop, we introduce participants to FLDPLN — a computationally efficient, terrain-based low complexity flood inundation model — and guide them step-by-step through the process of building the FLDPLN library and generating inundation depth maps using stream stage observations or forecasts for a study area.
Learning Outcomes:
- Install and set up FLDPLN and its dependencies
- Build a FLDPLN library for a study area by processing a hydro-conditioned DEM and defining stream segments.
- Map flood inundation extent and depth for specified stage inputs using FLDPLN’s mapping module.
Prerequisites:
- Prior knowledge:
- Basic familiarity with Python, GIS, hydrological terrain analysis.
- FLDPLN model, mapping tools and study area datasets are available on GitHub and KU ftp site.
- Participants can use either their own laptops or HydroShare or CIROH-2i2c JupyterHub for the workshop.
