flows2fim: Rapid Flood Inundation Mapping with Ripple1D FIM Libraries, Rating Curves, and NWM Streamflows
Day 1 Session 2 (1:30 PM)
Presenters:
Abdul Siddiqui, Earth Resources Technology, Inc.
Scott Lawson, Dewberry Engineers
This workshop will provide a theoretical as well as practical introduction to flows2fim, which is a command line utility to perform rapid near real-time (NRT) flood mapping for large areas using NWM streamflows and pre-generated reach-specific FIM Libraries and Rating Curves. This workshop will also provide a conceptual introduction to Ripple1D Software and how it is used to create FIM Libraries and Rating Curves for National Water Model Reaches from existing 1D HEC-RAS models, these datasets can then be used as input to flows2fim.
Learning Outcomes:
- Participants will learn the concept of Repurposing HEC-RAS models to create NWM reaches specific FIM Libraries and Rating Curves through Ripple1D software.
- Participants will learn the format of FIM Library and Rating Curves Database.
- Participants will learn how to create HUC8-wide composite FIMs using flows2fim for different return period flows and operational flows.
- Participants will learn the theory behind flows2fim.
- Participants will learn how to set up flows2fim to work with FIM libraries stored on the cloud.
Prerequisites:
Knowledge:
- Some understanding of command line, Hydraulics, and geospatial terminologies is desired but not required
Hardware/Software:
- flows2fim
- GDAL with Python bindings
- A geospatial visualization software such as QGIS
- FIM Libraries and RCs downloaded for a specimen HUC8 (check back later for links)
