Title: Applying the NextGen National Water Model to Improve Flood Forecasting Across the Hawaiian Islands

Presentation Type: Poster

Abstract: The Hawaiian Islands receive substantial rainfall annually, leading to frequent flood events. Their steep, mountain terrain and small watersheds, contributes to rapid streamflow, posing challenges for accurate and reliable flood forecasting. Precise flood prediction is essential to mitigate potential impacts on the communities and the economy. This study aims to assess the performance of the NextGen National Water Model (NWM) using CFE (Conceptual Functional Equivalent) model application in flow simulation across the watersheds in Hawaiian Islands. The model outputs will be compared to USGS streamflow data using a variety of metrics with respect to weather conditions and atmospherics forcings. Preliminary results highlight precipitation accuracy as the key factor influencing NWM simulation performance.
