Building a Multi-source Flood Inundation Database and Visualizing HAND and Model-Generated Flood Maps
Day 1 Session 1 (10:30AM)
Presenters:
Pitamber Wagle, PhD candidate
This workshop demonstrates how to generate, integrate, and visualize flood inundation maps using a unified database framework. Participants will create HAND-based flood maps for a selected area and explore model-generated flood products linked to the database, with all datasets stored and shared through HydroShare. The session highlights how multi-source flood maps can support early warning and strengthen NWM inundation forecasting, while providing hands-on experience with CIROH-supported tools.
Learning Outcomes:
- Generate HAND-based flood inundation maps for a selected area that could be replicated at any location.
- Access pre-generated model flood maps from the multi-source database
- Preprocess and optimize flood maps from any source
- Upload, organize, and share flood datasets using HydroShare
- Visualize and compare flood maps using FIM Visualization tool
- Learn about the ongoing research to support depth, velocity, and impact.
Prerequisites:
- Prior knowledge: Basic familiarity with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling concepts
- Familiarity with National Water Model (NWM)
- Software and data requirements:
- A laptop with internet access
- Google account (to run Google Colab notebooks)
- No local installations required.
- Provided datasets:
- Model-generated flood maps
- Set of input CSV files
- The database stored in HydroShare
- Accounts to set up
