How do I calibrate, regionalize and share the calibrated parameters in a NextGen Framework ecosystems

This workshop provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of calibration, regionalization, and sharing of model parameters within the NextGen framework. Attendees will gain hands-on experience calibrating hydrological models using open-source tools, learn best practices for regionalizing calibrated parameters for ungauged basins, and explore effective methods to share and manage these parameters for collaborative use. The session emphasizes practical calibration exercises, a theoretical discussion on regionalization techniques, and a brief hands-on demonstration of parameter sharing. By the end of the session, participants will have practical skills and resources to enhance the reproducibility and scalability of their modeling workflows.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the fundamentals of model calibration and its role in improving hydrological model accuracy.
  • Learn the theoretical basis of regionalizing calibrated parameters to improve predictions in ungauged basins.
  • Gain hands-on experience in calibration workflows using open-source tools.
  • Be introduced to tools and methods for effectively sharing calibrated parameters in collaborative environments.

Prerequisites:

Knowledge:

  • Experience using Python
  • Experience using Git
  • Some prior knowledge of Docker
  • Some experience with the command line/terminal
  • Experience with the NextGeneration Water Resource Modeling Framework (NextGen Framework) to Nextgen In A Box (NGIAB) workflow

Hardware/Software:

Attendees will be given access to a VM on NSF Jetstream with all necessary packages installed. Attendees should verify that they are able to access the VM before the workshop begins. Email will be sent to attendees one week before the Conference. Software required for using a local machine for the workshop is listed below.

  • Laptop w/browser installed
  • Git
  • Docker Desktop
  • Python
  • WSL (if using Windows)
  • IDE/Code Editor of choice (Options include VSCode, Sublime, and Vim)
  • Data will be obtained from public sources during the workshop. Data sources will be provided by the presenters
