Intelligent Data Analytics and Communication

Principal Investigator: Larry Weber
Research Team: Withold Krajewski, Ibrahim Demir
Insitution: IIHR Hydroscience & Engineering, University of Iowa & Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Iowa
Start Date: August 1, 2022 | End Date: July 31, 2024
Research Theme: Hydroinformatics

In this project, our aim is to pioneer the research and development of two key capabilities: AI-driven communication and visual data analytics tailored for hydrology and water resources. These endeavors are in alignment with CIROH’s research objectives focusing on hydroinformatics, and the social, economic, and behavioral sciences. With respect to intelligent systems, our goal is to design and prototype cutting-edge information and communication systems using conversational artificial intelligence systems. These systems will merge data and insights from both federal agencies and CIROH projects. By leveraging AI, intelligent systems, knowledge graphs, and ontologies, we intend to facilitate conversational interactions that make hydrological data and knowledge easily accessible. Under the visual data analytics focus, we aim to provide data services coupled with visual data analytics to support various projects and services under CIROH’s umbrella. With the aid of next-gen web technologies, advanced computing, data streaming services, and geo-spatial analytics techniques, users can conduct real-time damage assessment using HAZUS methodology; evaluate mitigation alternatives; analyze potential scenarios through ‘what-if’ analyses; conduct cost-benefit assessments; assess resilience and vulnerability using socio-economic and demographic data.
